Mackinac Island

If you’re fortunate enough to find yourself in the Northern Peninsula region of Michigan, you should make it a top priority to explore stunningly beautiful Mackinac Island. What makes it so special? For starters, it can only be reached by private boat, ferry, or small aircraft in the summer and in the winter by snowmobile. Motorized vehicles have been prohibited on the island since 1898 with the exception of the snowmobiles already mentioned. If you want to get around on this island you’re going to have to do it by foot, bicycle, or horse drawn carriage (and if you’re wondering about skates or blades, they’re allowed, but not in the downtown area). But don’t fret, the island is only about 8 miles in circumference and 3.8 square miles in total area so all this “getting around” is totally doable. The island contains a wide variety of terrain that includes fields, marshes, bogs, coastline, boreal forest, and limestone formations. And if you’re curious (more…)
