Rolling along the shores of Lake Michigan are the Michigan sand dunes, perhaps the largest conglomeration of fresh-water sand dunes anywhere in the world. The dunes cover a large stretch of the Lake Michigan shoreline, broken into a number of state parks and recreation areas for visitors to use. Most extensive of these is Silver Lake Sand Dunes state park, tucked between Lake Michigan and the shores of Silver Lake. This astonishing natural phenomenon offers you and your family plenty of space to explore and enjoy.
For a first time visitor, the dunes are a great place to climb and look out over the beautiful landscape around you. The difficult trek to the top will be well worth the effort and getting down should take no time at all. Visitors have been known to run, roll, sled or even snowboard down the sides of the dunes! Be aware that the north end of the state park allows off-road vehicles. While this area is clearly marked, it should be treated with care.
After a day playing in the sand, take some time to rest and sun on the beach by Lake Michigan. Bring a towel and relax while the kids build sand castles or swim in one of the designated swimming areas. Try your luck fishing in the lake or rent a kayak and explore the dunes from the water. For those who want a little more speed, rent a bike or a dune buggy and pedal through the 20 miles of wooded trails that wind through the park. If you are feeling hungry, stop by one of the nearby towns for a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants. Visitors wishing to spend the night can choose from a number of hotels or stay in the state park campground.
