One of the most impressive places to visit in the Detroit area is the Detroit Institute of Arts, more commonly called the DIA. The museum has been a centerpiece for culture and entertainment in Detroit for over 100 years.

The DIA has one of the largest collections of artwork, sculptures and other forms of art in the country. With over 60,000 paintings alone, the DIA houses many art pieces, from ancient Roman and Greek sculptures, to historically famous paintings by masters like Vincent van Gogh, to modern contemporary and pop art.

The DIA also offers many programs that are geared toward exploring the many forms of art. Friday Night Live is a program where gallery visitors can experience poetry readings or listen to the music of some of Detroit’s newest groups. Family Sundays are filled with events such as puppet shows, story telling and hands-on art projects.

The DIA has a long standing tradition of bring culture and art to the Detroit area by hosting traveling exhibits from around the world. Each year the DIA hosts a multitude of exhibits, including the annual Detroit Public School Exhibition which allows school children to see their art work hanging in the museum.
